One of the questions that our campaign team gets the most often is what is the platform of Rev. Joel McKinnon’s campaign. Here is Joel’s response –
I understand the reason for this question but I think our voters may not understand the responsibilities of a School Board Trustee in the state of Texas. When the state passes education laws/regulations it comes to the district where the School Board helps with compliance. The Board also works closely with the Superintendent including evaluating his/her work, approving the district vision and strategies.
Our current School Board has done a great job and my plan when elected is to offer support to the group and Superintendent wherever it is needed. No hidden agenda. We have the greatest school district in the state and I want to serve the district in every way possible. I cannot make promises, nor will I, that I am not able to deliver on. With that said, the one promise I can make is that I will pour myself into this district every single day with integrity and character. I will promise to do my best supporting and loving our students, teachers, administrators and entire district.
What am I passionate about in the schools? Here are just a few things:
The safety of our students and teachers is a must. If they do not feel safe, or if families do not believe their loved ones are safe, then it becomes very difficult for students to learn and for teachers to teach. My belief is that safety is not an optional program but a must for our district.
The district has done a good job as has Chief Gayle, of Angleton ISD Police Department, in being proactive in regards to the safety of our schools. When elected, I am committed to working with the district and Chief Gayle to make sure that we continually are evaluating our safety plans. I believe that programs like “Watchdogs” that many of the elementary schools have in place are of great assistance to our safety goals. I will continue to do whatever the Chief and district ask of the Board and community.
The district has done a great job, led by Superintendent Edwards, in bringing free breakfast and lunch to our district for every student. I have sat in Mr. Edwards office talking about the free meals and asking questions about providing meals in the summer. I was happy to learn that there is summer meal assistance but would be interested to see how it can grow. This may mean having the community partner with the district or some other strategy, but together we can accomplish the goal.
There is however one additional thing to consider and that is the nutritional value of the meals served. Since campaigning for the School Board I have heard from dozens of parents who would like to know if the food can be more nutritional. I have not spent much time researching the meals served in our schools but am interested in learning about their nutritional value.
It is critical that our students are reading on or above grade level by the third and eighth grade. Studies indicate that for those students who are not reading on level by those grades that statistically they are more likely to later in life be unemployed, without healthcare, incarcerated, as well as many other challenges.
I believe that we have the means in our district to make sure that all students are reading at or above grade levels. Between the number of churches, retired teachers, and amazing citizens of Angleton we have the ability to offer mentoring programs to any student who needs additional help. Historically, we know that there is a slide backwards during the summer months in the reading levels of students. It is of my opinion that the group mentioned above can help remedy the summer slide with creative reading programs. Together we can make a difference.
Please remember that these are just a few things that are important to me as a father of children in the district, as a pastor of students of all ages, and as a potential Board Member. They are things that I am passionate about in our schools. For this reason, I will ask questions to other Board Members about these and many other subjects. The reminder is what I shared at the top of this page. As a Trustee on the School Board I would faithfully serve per the guidelines the state has set of all districts and I will support our Superintendent and other Board Members.
